February 2025

Hey everyone,

I hope the busiest period for preparing annual reports is behind you. Hopefully, some of you have even managed to squeeze in a bit of skiing this winter.

With the technical teams at the Big 4 deep into client work during the busy season, February has been relatively quiet in terms of new publications. One notable exception is BDO’s latest release on the IFRS 9 amendments regarding PPAs. I have to say, BDO has really stepped up the quality of its technical publications — they’re clear, detailed, and well thought out.

Let’s dive in.

Technical Publications

BDO’s take on PPAs

BDO is the latest firm to release a technical publication on IFRS 9 amendments related to nature-dependent electricity contracts, commonly structured as power purchase agreements (PPAs). Their publication provides valuable practical insights and examples, making it a worthwhile read.

If you’re interested in PPAs, I’ve got you covered. Below are links to all the Big 4 publications on this topic since December:

You’re welcome! 😉

Volatility, hedging, and own-use accounting for commodity derivatives

For those just getting started with commodity derivatives such as PPAs, the Footnotes Analyst team has put together a useful article. It outlines the four different accounting approaches for such contracts. The article is designed for investors without deep IFRS expertise, so it should be accessible regardless of your familiarity with derivatives.

EY’s 2025 edition of International GAAP

EY has released the 2025 edition of its highly regarded accounting manual. The online version is available through EY’s client portal. Registration is free, though it does require navigating a few authentication steps. Personally, I often find it easier to use the PDF version (just a heads-up: it’s a 178 MB file).

Work in Progress at the IASB

The IASB, as always, is hard at work improving IFRS. That said, there haven’t been any major developments this month that require your attention, so…

That’s all for this edition of Reporting Period. Your feedback is always welcome — feel free to reply directly to this email with any thoughts or suggestions.
